I Won't Go Gentle Into That New Millennium
The Shape of X29 Dec 2011 | 9:42 pmTwo and a half years ago I wrote about my disdain for a cute Asian girl who showed up on TV claiming "I'm a PC and I'm 4 and a half," while she showed off her deft technology skills. This little tyke put me to shame. At the time I was "37 and a Walkman."I just--finally--got my first iPod this Christmas, exactly 24 years to the day after I got my first (and only) Sony Walkman cassette player. Last night I spent two hours trying to set it up. Generation X and the Mom-Made Costume
The Shape of X28 Oct 2011 | 2:55 pmMy brother emailed me yesterday with the news that our hometown is having its 53rd annual Halloween parade this weekend. This is the same parade we participated in ourselves every year as kids. The parade still follows the same route through downtown, still hands out the same "goody bag" to every participant, still gives prizes for the best costumes. That parade was something every kid in town looked forward to, racing home from school on October 31st to change into our costumes to meet up to march. I love that the tradition continues. I only wish I still lived there to go watch it this year. -

Is Ferris Bueller is Back?

No flu shot for Gen X?
26 Jan 2012 | 8:10 amA man on a scooter gets a flu shot during a "drive flu" in Napa, CA., October 2011. Image by Getty Images via @daylife I hate to admit this, but I made sure every person in our family of five got the flu shot except me! I don't know if I think I'm flu-immune or what. I'm terrified of the flu because it actually does kill people every year. The things we pass down from one generation to another
25 Jan 2012 | 8:35 amKillybegs Harbour, County Donegal, Ireland | by Andrew_D_Hurley via Flickr | Creative Commons Applies My dad always told me to keep my eyes peeled. It was just one of those funny things he always said, like "talk 'til I'm blue in the face." He always said that when words alone couldn't convince someone of something. Sometimes, when he had nothing to say at all or when he wanted to infuse the room with a happy neutrality, he'd rest his chin in the palm of his hand and ask if we thought the rain would hurt the rhubarb. I loved that saying and many more. The thing is, I never knew what half of…

Good idea + Acts of Faith + God's Energy = Amounts to Something
27 Jan 2012 | 7:48 amFaith is a verb. Have you ever thought of that? Many people talk about "having faith" but true faith is lived out. Saving For a Down Payment on a House
27 Jan 2012 | 8:38 amThe shakeup in the housing market over the past several years has brought the need and advantages of a down payment when buying a new home back into focus. In a traditional mortgage, the home buyer was required to provide a 20% down payment at the time of closing. This trend shifted during the housing boom and often allowed buyers to purchase a new home with little or no money down. This practice persisted until the financial meltdown of 2008 brought both borrowers and lenders back to reality and down payments have become a part of buying a new home again. While many of these low or… -
Five Money Saving Habits You’ll Want to Learn This Year
24 Jan 2012 | 8:20 amWhen it comes to saving money, there’s no better time to get back on track than the New Year. For some miraculous reason, January gives people hope and inspires them to change their ways. That’s why New Year’s resolutions are so comical. In retrospect, everyone wishes that they had done something different the previous year. So they over plan and overanalyze until they reach the point of frustration and scrap their goals altogether. I’m here to say that there are better ways to spend your time. If you truly want to be financially fit, you’ll pay careful attention to the advice… -

19 Jan 2012 | 10:23 amMax Out Your 2011 IRA in 2012 The calendar may have flipped to the new year, which means most tax tricks, tips, and deductions have closed the book on last year’s taxes, but that isn’t the case for your IRAs. Individual Retirement Accounts are unique in that they give you up until when you file your taxes on or before the April 16th tax deadline. That means you have a full three and a half extra months in the new year to catch up on an entire year of Roth IRA or Traditional IRA contributions if you choose to. This is good news for many people because it’s easy to forget to… -

How to Find Legitimate Work From Home Opportunities
16 Jan 2012 | 1:18 pmWe’ve all received an email with urgent information about how we can make our living in a few hours a day by working from home. Although opportunities like this do exist, these unsolicited messages are often deemed as nothing more than spam sent by scammers trying to get your credit card information. If you’re diligent about checking into opportunities you’ll find that you really can make money online or at home from anywhere.

Friday Bullets For A Week Of Actual Winter
20 Jan 2012 | 6:14 amWhat a funny season. Thaws, rains, freezes, winds, blackouts and snow with thunder. Reminds me more of the east cost than the center of the continent. OK, the eastern edge of the center. The debates go on for the GOP. Seems like every candidate is a bit sketchy but each distinctly so. Newt said that the media made it harder to attract good people to public office. Is the contest proving the point? Friday Bullets For The Week Of The Blackout
13 Jan 2012 | 6:20 amThe power went out. From 3 pm to midnight yesterday. Sat around in one room for the evening and marveled at the power of the battery. I tweeted and listened to radio. Ice was to blame. Ice from the sky. Fortunately, it appears to have rained all night washing away the coating. A few trees in the neighbourhood fell. Now, there is good reason to have those ribs in the freezer ♦ I like beer as much as the next guy. Probably more. 10 Jan 2012 | 6:57 amIs there nothing as fraught as a Canadian of any political stripe claiming that we are being manipulated by the United States? The ammunition for Ottawa’s broadside against the pipeline’s opponents is drawn in part from the work of a relatively little-known blogger from North Vancouver. In the last 15 months, independent blogger and single mother Vivian Krause has become a one-person clearinghouse on how U.S. money is helping finance Canadian environmental activism. Ms. Krause has used her “Fair Questions” blog to document the money trail behind what she calls the “U.S.-funded… -
Friday Bullets For Yet Another New Year
6 Jan 2012 | 6:51 amWhy do we moan about another birthday but not New Years? Consider the alternative. It's me and the cat this week and I have been inordinately busy. The electrician has been in. The stash now has a light switch thanks to the electricians coming in on Wednesday. One wall has one coat of light sandy old paper sort of colour instead.of a grey plummy tone that looked like great auntie's lipstick. I changed the furnace filter. I bought a toilet flap. You Fest Of Linky Goodness For Nameless Week
29 Dec 2011 | 9:22 pmSo what do you call the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve? I don't think of them as the holidays. They are the weeks before the 24th when you spend and spend and spend and spend and spend as if you were in some sort of Bacchanalian cult... oh, well there is that. These days are the days of foreboding. Not of the New Year. But of the New Year's Eve party. The dark night. Evening of the lost... of the damned. Speaking of the lost and the damned, how unholy a thing it would be to be a journalist this week. Nothing happens, like this:♦ Who caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaares! Yet it's is…

It’s a croc!
5 Jan 2012 | 3:24 pmWhile in Austin, every day I found myself on Guadalupe Street. Once to chauffeur my woozy BIL to get his teeth yanked, multiple times to buy overpriced records, and once to look at sordid pictures of my wife’s uterus. Apparently we are expecting a girl alligator: What a croc... My father-in-law, where we stayed, lives 40 minutes (sans traffic) from Guadalupe Street. My Libyan kids visit Austin
30 Dec 2011 | 5:06 pmAh yes, another end-of-the-year spent in Austin, TX. Never been to Austin? This picture pretty much sums it up for me: Bulgogi burgers? Wow. Sounds weird. Sounds fantastic. What a combo! Too bad it’s kind of terrible. And just like this fab purple building, Austin has mile after mile of funky one story sprawl. Fun, but no matter how much lipstick you apply, sprawl is still a pig. What I DO like about Austin is the cheap food and the live music. There is something to be said for eating good food while watching a master of his craft play a show on a Tuesday night. -

She says she used to play it with her friend Lydia. “Lydia always tries to get away from the mean janitor and go to Candyland, but she never makes it. She usually ends up in Smallville. You never want to be in Smallville because in Smallville you can get smushed by the mean janitor’s broom.” Grasping for a point of reference, I asked, “Do you have a mean janitor at your school?”. “No”, she replied, “Just a man named Tom that… -

It’s not a game I play, though perhaps one day I’ll join the ranks of doughy geezers trying to prove that they “still got it”. Today I read in the paper that the local golf course has closed for the season. I’ve often heard locals making fun of the course saying it was all ghetto and whatnot, so I thought today might be a nice day to take the dog for a highly illegal walk through the course, just to see what a ghetto golf course be lookin like. 12 Oct 2011 | 12:19 pmIn the foreground is a pot that one of my kids decorated, probably back in kindergarten. It holds no significance to me. But it’s not broken, and it seems heartless to throw it away. So I put it on the ledge. When it gets knocked over by a basketball and smashed to bits, I’ll gladly sweep the fragments into the trash bin. In the middle is some sort of weed/herb that grows unchecked beyond my usual bi-monthly mowing. It tastes like a combination of oregano, mint, and basil. In the background is a window that is enjoying its last week on earth. Structurally, this corner…

WTF Files: Duggars Have Obituary and Memorial Service for Miscarried Fetus

A reader of this blog has asked that I tell you about it. Here is the info that was provided:"The film is about to do a limited run in both New York (opening Jan 4th at IFC Film Center) and LA (Jan 6th and Laemmle Music Hall)-- A nice way to ring in the New Year.":JOHN MELLENCAMP: IT’S ABOUT YOU is a new musical documentary… -

"The Eye" -- So You Can Figure Out What You Wanted From the Pantry
2 Nov 2011 | 8:34 amI'm not a mystical person. I do not subscribe to superstitions in the least. A black cat can cross my path, and I am not bothered by it one single bit (except for the fact that I don't care for cats--they don't give good kisses like dogs do). The Mayans can proclaim cataclysm, and I think: "So long as they don't cancel Glee, have at it, world". But as a student of culture (our own, as well as those of the past), I am interested in the imagery of mysticism and understand the rich heritage that stands behind it. Throughout the ages, many cultures have believed that wearing the symbol of an eye… -
The Wonder Years: More Like the "Wonderful Years"
25 Oct 2011 | 5:05 pmI may have blogged about The Wonder Years in the past, but I can't help doing it again.I get away with mentioning this program because, although it is set in the 1960s and early 70s, this series was filmed in the 1980s and early 90s. Watching this excellent show was part of my high school and college years, for sure. Even though I was not so far removed from the middle school trials, tribulations and triumphs of Kevin Arnold, I was old enough to understand the nostalgic quality of the program even then. I found the narration to be beautiful (and true).Because all the episodes of this… -
80s Makeup -- otherwise known as makeup from the time before dinosaurs
10 Aug 2011 | 9:53 amAfter doing my recent color analysis exercise, I started to really think about 80s makeup (as I stated before, the experts in ridiculous lady things say that bright colors are supposed to 'work' for me). I am sure most of you remember a few years during the 1980s when you lined your eyes in cobalt or electric blue (take a long look at my stupid profile picture ... hmmmm...). I am sure you remember the upswept blocks of clashing colors on the eyelids. You remember green mood lipstick (I know you want to read about it here). You may even remember sticking tape to your upper eyelids while…

The Nylon Hurtin'
14 Jan 2012 | 10:47 pmIn the movie Steel Magnolias, Dolly Parton's character, Truvy, claims she hasn't left the house without pantyhose on since she was 14 years old. To this her friend Clairee confirms, "You were raised right!"Does this make you cringe, or raise your white-gloved fist in prim solidarity? Generation X women came of age on the cusp of the change in dress code attitudes, balancing on the cotton crotch of the Great Pantyhose Divide. We grew up when hose were still the norm, but we entered the professional world realizing we weren't so keen on spending our paychecks on clothing that had a life span of… -
I Won't Go Gentle Into That New Millennium
29 Dec 2011 | 9:42 pmTwo and a half years ago I wrote about my disdain for a cute Asian girl who showed up on TV claiming "I'm a PC and I'm 4 and a half," while she showed off her deft technology skills. This little tyke put me to shame. At the time I was "37 and a Walkman."I just--finally--got my first iPod this Christmas, exactly 24 years to the day after I got my first (and only) Sony Walkman cassette player. Last night I spent two hours trying to set it up. Download this program, register this gadget, create this account, autosign this legal agreement, oops you're due for updates (really, Apple? three sets of… -
Generation X and the Mom-Made Costume
28 Oct 2011 | 2:55 pmMy brother emailed me yesterday with the news that our hometown is having its 53rd annual Halloween parade this weekend. -
The New Ladies of Leisure
20 Sep 2011 | 6:50 pmI was watching an episode of a new MTV show called Awkward recently. In a scene involving a mother-daughter party, an angst-ridden teenage girl described a group of mothers who fit into the mean-girl-turned-trophy wife category. "These women don't work, they work out," the teenager said. As this line was uttered, the women were admiring the toned and tanned biceps of their hostess. It made me think about how the physical traits of status have evolved over the centuries. On a visit to the Cairo Museum when I was 12, I saw statues of Prince Rahotep and Princess Nofret, each sitting on a throne. -
One Dish, Gold Dish, Two Dish, Old Dish
17 Aug 2011 | 10:28 pmThis summer I’ve spent weekends in three different beach condos in three different Florida towns. Interestingly, the kitchens in all three came furnished with the same exact dishes…Correlle brand’s “Butterfly Gold” pattern. I noticed this not because I’m a china pattern aficionado, but because this is the same dish set I grew up with in the 1970s and 1980s. Every meal of every day from birth until adulthood was eaten off Butterfly Gold. First introduced in 1970, Butterfly Gold’s universal appeal was that it matched the harvest gold appliances and countertops so popular at that…

Japanese artist Riusuke Fukahori paints three-dimensional...
27 Jan 2012 | 1:31 amJapanese artist Riusuke Fukahori paints three-dimensional goldfish using a complex process of poured resin. The fish are painted meticulously, layer by layer, the sandwiched slices revealing slightly more about each creature, similar to the function of a 3D printer. -

Politics, politics politics...
18 Jan 2012 | 1:25 pmI try to stay out of politics. Like talking about religion or College football, it tends to divide people. That being said, when you run a business in a small town politics are part of the air you breathe. In the past I have always stated my stance as “common sense is more important to me than politics and the two rarely seem to be found together.” I still stand by that statement. It seems that lately, especially with the upcoming elections, people want to know what label you wear. I have never been big on designer fashion, so I admittedly don’t care much about labels. But if I have to… -
Merry Christmas!
24 Dec 2011 | 11:57 amIt’s the most wonderful time of the year…Well, it can be if you slow down, unplug, relax and take the time to take it in and be mentally and spiritually present for the opening of the presents. When you are overworked, overwhelmed and overrun with the stresses of everyday life already, Christmas can seem like the straw that broke the donkey’s back. (I know that a camel is normally used in this cliché but being that we are discussing Christmas, a donkey just seemed more appropriate)It’s not until you are forced to stop the insanity and listen to the jingle bells that Christmas… -
Family is the great gumbo of life.
8 Dec 2011 | 11:16 amI like gumbo. When Iwas a bartender at Applebees working my way through college I lovedThursdays. It was chicken gumboday. The soup du jour. At Applebees it was, as is everything there, very very consistent. No surprises. It was really my only gumbo experience. Growing up in Northeast Ohio does not lenditself to a wide range of culinary exploration, especially in the gumboarena. So the never-changing Applebeesgumbo was in my mind the “good stuff”, the norm.Turns out that gumbo and normal should have NOTHING incommon.Once I was married and… -

7 Dec 2011 | 10:27 amRememberingPear Harbor…OnDecember 7th 1941 as the first wave of enemy planes began to attack Hickam Field several scored directhits on the Hawaiian Air Depot's engineering building. After the first raid, all Hawaiian Air Depot officers came in to help with firefighting, salvagingmaterial, and other heroic work to keep the depot operation amidst the attack.Approximately 100 civilian employees also reported for duty, including Mr.Phillip Ward Eldred, a purchasing clerk. Mr. Eldred hadhelped create the Hawaiian Air Depot credit union, and was dedicated to thecoworkers who had trusted… -
Wow...has it really been since June?
12 Oct 2011 | 7:34 amTalk about a case of neglect. I haven't so much as thought about writing since the middle of June. Coincidentally, that is about the time the heavy construction began on the credit union branch in Orrville.Ohhh so many lessons learned since then...Blogs to follow about all kinds of wonderfully trivial things.
