Mother's Day 2012
13 May 2012 | 7:15 pmFor Mother's Day, Juliette bought me some jewelry by one of my favorite designers, Betsey Johnson. Hello, Beautiful. You've been dieting way too much. Mmmmmm. Cherry super fruits for my ears. Thanks, Juey! Nice blue nail polish. The Super Bridgy drew me this awesome picture. That's her and me holding hands. This is a Mother's Day project Sullivan did at school. Apparently he thinks I like to work all day. I'd recognize this kind of drawing anywhere. This is Juey's style. My Employer Stopped Matching My 401k – Should I Still Contribute?
7 May 2012 | 9:35 amThis is one of the most frequently asked questions I’ve been receiving lately both at work and via email. Companies across the country are trying to find ways to cut costs during this recession and a prime target is the matching program on a 401(k) or 403(b). This is bad news for employees, but the silver lining is that cutting the match may reduce the need for cutting jobs. That might be a glass half-full way to think about it, but what if your match is taken away? Should you still contribute? Should you switch to an IRA? Or is it time to give up on retirement saving completely? -
3 Things to Think About When Getting a Pay Raise
3 May 2012 | 8:05 amThe story is very typical. You get a call from the big boss and he asks you to come into his main office. You’ve been working hard the last two years and you’ve been hoping and praying for a pay raise. Your blood races faster and you start smiling. You walk confidently into his office and shake your boss’s hand. You sit down and wait for your boss to speak. ”You’re getting a pay raise, Jimmy!” You smile some more and exhale a big “thank you!” You feel like you’re on top of the world and now all the hard work has finally paid… -
How to Buy a New Car the Right Way
2 May 2012 | 7:32 amNext to buying a home, buying a new car is right up there as one of the largest and more stressful financial decisions you’ll make. After all, buying a vehicle is a commitment and your decision will likely stick with you for a few years and become an integral part of your life. That’s why most people have so much difficulty making this important decision and why there are so many salesmen and dealers using tricks to manipulate the sale, which could cost you thousands. But if you go into a new car purchase with the right information, know the questions that must be asked, and the tricks to…

Your Friday Bullets For The Last Lingering Cold
11 May 2012 | 6:20 amIt has been a late spring, hasn't it? I put out the squash and tomatoes this week but only half of them... maybe less. You never know if it is going to be in the 70s or the 30s this week. But I think that is over. We have the best dandelions on the block. Always do. Has something to do with the push mower I think. Not sufficiently black hole like in its capacities. But I do not apologize. I am not like Mitt in that respect. Unlike our stumping skills where we are one. This weekend may be dedicated to whipper snipping. ♦ Good for my old home Kings and good for us all that the selling of… -
Garden 2012: The Ugly Shrubs Are Dead Dead Dead
6 May 2012 | 4:20 pmWe each chose a most hated shrub and killed them today. One of the great things about gardening is being that grim reaper who takes away so that others might have a little more light, a sip more water or just the spot occupied by that the ugly thing in the corner by the fence. My own dead semi-tree of choice was chopped and stacked to be replaced by a big pile of sheep poo and peat moss where the squash shall hold dominion this summer. The ground there was a bit mossy and weighed down by clay so I buried a small short gravel and rock drain to draw the water away. The first effort at starting… -
Your Friday Bullet Points For The End of April
27 Apr 2012 | 6:58 amDid you miss these bullet points? Fridays have been hard lately. Or at least I have lost all imagination. I think that may be it. Or there are four to six kids in the house at any one time. I am liking the garden blogging. Gar-logging? I miss 2004. When poeple pretended blogging would change the world. But, really, at least I hung around. Jay and Darcey's blog URLs are each now spammy. How sad. Once amongst the greats. I feel like an 8-track hobbyist. The beer blog rolls on and on, of course. But that's because it's about beer, right? ♦ It has to happen sooner or later. No matter how… -
Garden 2012: The Return Of The Risk Of Frost
22 Apr 2012 | 11:06 amWe were fooled. Warm has been replaced by cold. Next week there is a risk of frost. Fortunately, we did not go too far down the road of planting. The peas are just taking their first peak above soil and the blue hubbard squash has been transplanted into pots that can be brought inside. Seeing as I have not even done the taxes, this is good timing. The Arkansas leeks and Cherokee Purple tomatoes seeds were only planted in the trays yesterday waiting down in the basement to decide when it is time to sprout. Very early days.Lots of time for digging, however. Me and the lad were out this morning… -
Garden 2012: Today I Did Dig And Split The Rhubarb
14 Apr 2012 | 2:59 pmRhubarb is one of my favorite things. Spring food. Sour and astringent. It makes the years since childhood contract. A cup of white sugar into which a raw stem was rammed, the stalk chewed as if on a dare. Stewed rhubarb leading to the earliest bowel related humour at our table, pretend mad dashes for the washroom mid-dessert. Pies. Lard rich crust glazed with a crackle of rhubarb filling. Later, as a young married couple, we made weak rhubarb juice on a slow simmer that was cooled then mixed with cheap Ontario white wine as a particularly fine weekend drink. Today, I dug up and separated the…

Called it — crazy is as crazy does!
21 Apr 2012 | 8:49 amA word to the wise fellas (and ladies too no doubt): at the first whiff of crazy run! Run fast, run hard, and run long. And don’t — I repeat do NOT look back, lest you be sucked back in by the crazy tractor beam. This is my problem, what I do too often. I look back and think, maybe…. DON’T DO THAT! [swat with a rolled newspaper on the nose] This of course raises the question, what does crazy smell like anyway? There in lies the rub — crazy comes in a plethora of fragrances. It can have a simple, basic smell, like ivory soap and water. Or it can be more pungent,… -
Should I be annoyed….
19 Apr 2012 | 5:37 pm…by this response on eHarmony from a woman I contacted? Hi Chris, wanted to send you a note as I find your profile very humorous and appealing. But I am pursuing a relationship and have shut down matches. If my situation changes I will seek you out. Chances are you will be snapped up. Best of luck to you, I mean, yeah, sure, it’s complimentary, but really why respond at all? That’s what most people do. That’s what I do. Would you rather get no response or response such as this? Summer of the Zombie Novel
19 Apr 2012 | 9:46 amMy daughter has been working on a zombie novel. She is very excited about it. It’s a about a kid named TJ and begins with him day-dreaming in school about this girl, Debbie, that he kind of likes. After that the structure gets a bit fuzzy, but still it sounds cool. Anyway, it got me to thinking that maybe it is time I started work on my own zombie novel. I’ve been kicking one around in my head for awhile now. Here is the opening: For the past thirty-seven hours I have been trapped in my ex-wife’s attic. And I can still hear them down there. By them I don’t mean my… -
The Return of Gigi
19 Apr 2012 | 9:33 amThis may prove to be an ill-advised post. But aren’t those the best kind? Gigi has returned. If you’re recall she was the one that gave me the let’s just be friends speech — actually, it was a text, but no matter, you get the point. Some time after that we had a text blow out, based on the fact that she had promised to allow me to contact her if I felt comfortable doing so and then proceeded to contact me anyway. When I pressed her on her intentions she shut down and eventually ended the conversation which led to us basically ending any contact at all. I predicted that… -
Emotional Vibrator
12 Apr 2012 | 8:53 amEmotional vibrator is a phrase I used in my last post in regards to Gigi, the most recent lady of the online night to take her leave of me. And really, who can blame her, right? I thought it quite clever myself, although I’m not sure I coined the phrase. In any case, it seemed to me what Gigi wanted me to be for her, an emotional affirmation machine to help soothe her through her most recent break-up blah blah blah. But of course I was unwilling to do that because it seemed a one-sided and ultimately losing proposition for me. I don’t expect a sure thing – although I did like that 80s…

16 May 2012 | 2:12 am5/15/12 Here you go, A Few Things To Know About Surgery for a Deviated Septum, or The Worst Week You Didn't Actually Know How Much You Needed. Or, in the original German, Nasennebenhöhlenchirurgie. • I have oft-bemoaned Facebook for a number of reasons, the most central of which is "they shouldn't get to have everything." I've seen the toll FB has taken on some of my favorite things on the internet, and I'm happy to keep fighting that fight as long as I still have the pissin' vinegar for it. But somehow, in a post-op haze, I blindly groped for my phone and half-saw a picture Tessa took of… -

10 May 2012 | 2:57 am5/9/12 As you read this, I'll be entering the mental state my daughter has decided to call "torpor" after reading about hummingbirds at night. The rest of the medical community calls it "general anesthesia". I'm getting surgery for a deviated septum, and I find myself vaguely freaked out by the kind of recovery time these things can have. I probably wouldn't be so torqued and off-put by the surgery if it weren't for the various medical nightmares some of our close friends are going through. This kind of operation happens a thousand times a day, and I've always tolerated anesthesia well… -

9 May 2012 | 2:27 am5/8/12 Wow, North Carolina, you sure know a historic anticlimax when you see one. Just when you were poised to become the progressive leader of the New South, entering the future with 10 million eyes focused on things that matter, you went and told homosexuals they were lesser humans. I'm finding it hard to conjure the words of how this makes me feel... Nauseous? Disgusted? Furious? I've always been a proud Tar Heel, with two words mind you, but now I'm seeing the benefit of just staying in parts of the country that treat people fairly. 8 May 2012 | 2:27 am5/7/12 all hail Nik Kershaw Inspired by my brother Kent's list from yesterday and caveman's Sugarcubes link, today's question is deceptively simple: Can you name two or three songs that you loved from the past, that are forever locked away on an otherwise-popular album? Last year, we did the secret crush songs entry, but those songs had to have been on the radio. Today's question asks you to name a few songs from a band, artist or album that most of us might know, but the song itself is a little secret gem. Perhaps a song from a record famous for other songs, or a song from an artist known…

15 May 2012 | 6:01 pmIt’s now much easier for you and your commenters to keep track of the conversations you’re involved in across WordPress.com. Some recent tests have shown that by subscribing commenters to new comments by default, they are more likely to stay engaged and come back and comment more on your blog. With that knowledge, we’ve changed the default comment following behavior to help you get more conversations going on your blog. We made the initial changes last week and after great feedback from you we just launched an update. Here’s how it works: By default, posting a comment… -

Sweatin' in an Oldie
15 May 2012 | 8:55 pmEvery time I watch an episode of Hoarders, at some point I think, "how can he/she possibly be attached to that (piece of fabric/empty box/magazine from 1991)?" I wonder why these people can't see that the object(s) in front of them are clearly garbage that should be tossed out. But the truth is, we all own something whose value is understood only by ourselves. One thing I can't throw out is a college sweatshirt I bought in 1986. At the time I was 14 years old and visiting my brother at his school during Parents Weekend. In anticipation of this trip I saved my allowance for weeks, knowing… -
Sail On, Silver Girl
9 Apr 2012 | 8:21 pmThe summer between my 6th and 7th-grade school years saw a horrific crime in my hometown. In July 1983, a 17-year-old high school senior and her 14-year-old friend were picked up by two men while hitching a ride to the beach. By the end of the day both were raped and the older of the two, Lynn Carol Elliott, was murdered while trying to escape. Her friend narrowly survived, found by police bound in the rafters of a house. Lynn's heroic attempt ultimately saved her friend's life and, as we came to learn, put an end to a serial killer's heinous obsession. Today, almost 29 years later, Lynn's… -
Running Into the Sun
7 Apr 2012 | 2:38 pmI have a love/hate relationship with running. I like the way I feel after I've done it but I don't really enjoy doing it. I like the shoes but not the shorts. I like that at a lot of races they hand out beer afterwards. I fully understand the benefits of regular running, and I see how great my runner friends look, but I still struggle with motivating myself to do it. When I got up this morning after sleeping in late, I opened up Facebook. The top-most post was a picture of four women who'd just completed a 5K run. Good grief, I thought, I've only made it downstairs and they've already… -
Introverts: A User's Manual (part II)
5 Mar 2012 | 5:17 pmMy mom says she knew I was introverted even as a baby. Long before I could verbalize my needs, Mom knew. She said that I would be playing with someone, giggling and smiling, and then at some point I'd just get fussy for no obvious reason. I wasn't hungry or need a diaper change, but I was agitated. So she'd take me into a quiet room for a bit and I'd relax. And this was even before I could walk or talk. As a small child I used to spend time in our cans cupboard. It started out as a good place to play peek-a-boo, but then I started going in there just to hang out. I'd scoot the canned peaches… -
More Than Chocolate
14 Feb 2012 | 3:26 pmAs a general rule, 7th-grade boys are gross. They smell funny, their voices are changing, and they think they're cooler than they are. Straddling the age between kid and teenager, they're still wearing boy scout uniforms, but stuffed in their pocket is a crumpled page from a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition that they swiped from their uncle's garage. Their idea of humor is fart jokes, shooting girls with rubberbands, and stepping on the backs of our shoes to give us "flat tires." Charming. But Ryan was different. He was my 7th-grade boyfriend in 1984. A preppy boy with green eyes and…

Dear little baby girl,
13 May 2012 | 4:22 pmThis is our first Mothers Day together! Well, sort of. I’ve been calling it our “.5 Mothers Day”. You’re pretty active today, actually! Kicking and backflipping or whatever it is you’re doing in there. We’re now 117 days away from my due date, which means we’re 23 weeks and 3 days in. At 20 weeks we were at the halfway point and on that day (April 20th, to be exact) I found out you are a girl! That made me so happy! I would have loved you either way, but deep down I wanted you to be a girl so bad. I’m still trying to figure out what to name… -

We are Free...Really?
15 May 2012 | 10:31 amI want to ask one and only one thing from you all, are we really living in a free country? Today while turning the pages of newspaper, I came across an article regarding cartoons to be abolished from being printed in NCERT Books. The reason being that they make students more appealing. Moreover, they make fun of our not so funny politicians in cartoons which is not liked by them obviously. I gave this one a thought and realized that we are given the rights but these rights, when put to use are taken away from us. They should learn to face criticism and should take it positively. When… -

Trust Me, I Didn't Do It!!
10 May 2012 | 12:00 amBLAME, this one simple word can create havoc in one's life. Many people can't cope up with this even if the blame is right. People tend to run away from it and if they are caught, they give up and attempt heinous crimes like suicide. It's been years and evidences from past that people can't bear with the word 'Blame.' Let me give you all an example, remember the movie 'Shaitan'? in which the group of friends killed a couple by their over speeding hummer. hey were drunk and rich. They didn't care about what they did. But what happened in the end, they all killed each other because they passed… -
Nobody Is Listening
9 May 2012 | 4:02 amEnvironment, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat all is comprised within the environment. They are saying, several measures have been taken to control the environmental decay, but nobody is listening her screams, "SAVE ME". She is crying for help from us. Nature has given us many things that we need for our survival. The ecosystem which we live in is being hampered and being destroyed day by day. Population is increasing such that it can't bear the weight. The news about the Tsunami, the earthquakes rock the world but still everybody is mum about it. They just bear the… -
The Picture Just Got Dirtier
5 May 2012 | 10:40 pmRemember 'The Dirty Picture', movie featuring 'Vidya Balan' and depicting the life of 'Silk Smitha'. This flick, when released caused a turmoil amongst the entertainment industry guys as well as the viewers. Well people in India, as far as I know, pardon me if I am wrong, love to watch things if they are publicized to that much extent to cross the limits. When it was being aired on television, the I&B ministry, stalled the viewing even after 59 cuts in the movie. I saw the news and was like :O literally, 59 cuts? what the movie would be with so many cuts. You will not able to relate the…
